The Veilguard opens to huge player numbers on Steam

Key Takeaways

  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard has reached over 85,000 concurrent players on Steam.

  • This is after over 84,000 players were brought in at once yesterday, indicating this was a successful launch weekend for BioWare.

  • We’re still waiting on console figures, but Dragon Age: The Veilguard is also high in the PS5 sales charts.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard has surpassed 85,000 concurrent players on Steam during its opening weekend. This beats the previous record of over 84,000 concurrent players, set yesterday, and caps off a successful launch week for BioWare’s comeback RPG.

Of course, concurrent players only count those who are all playing at the same time, and even then it’s only whoever owns the game on PC. At this point we can’t say how many people have played Dragon Age: The Veilguard in total, but this suggests it’s going well – and certainly much better than BioWare’s most recent releases before it.

This figure makes Dragon Age: The Veilguard one of the most played single-player games on Steam right now, which isn’t bad for an RPG aimed more at console players. We can’t see concurrent players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the other platforms where The Veilguard can be picked up.

But even before launch, The Veilguard topped the bestseller list on PS5, so it’s likely to perform well on that platform as well. Right now, the PlayStation website shows it in fourth place, just behind NBA 2K25, Fortnite and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

There was a lot of expectation that The Veilguard would be a hit for BioWare. While the previous game in the series, Dragon Age: Inquisition, sold incredibly well, the studio has struggled since then. Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem were flops, and a fourth Dragon Age game languished in development hell for years, at one point proposed as a live service. This was scrapped a few years ago and development restarted so that the long-awaited sequel could stick to the series’ single-player roots.

Despite this apparent success, we may not be getting much more Dragon Age for a while. BioWare recently confirmed that The Veilguard will not be getting DLC, as the studio’s focus now shifts to the next Mass Effect game.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the highly anticipated fourth game in BioWare’s fantasy RPG series, previously known as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. It is a direct sequel to Inquisition and focuses on red lyrium and Solas, the aforementioned Dread Wolf.
